  • Interesting where the world is going when you require a missile system for a sporting event. I guess it's better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it.

    • @scubasteve075 Yea but there's been a permanent target rich environment and they haven't pulled of a major attack in years, that suggests we're being successful.

  • A very cool system. Multiple firing modes, optical, thermal, radar and pointer with a very intuitive firing interface and even laser targeting now.

I've seen video of one of these leave the rail and it was unbelievably agile.

Just about every part of it has been upgraded since I worked on a training system for it.

I played on that simulator, my father was an ERF engineer on Rapier for BAe

    • @skerne Awesome :-), not sure if it's the same sim though, should have been in use around 1995 or 96 onwards. Had optical and thermal support and the pointing stick in front of a projection screen. Largely used for target identification and scenario training. Helos and aircraft flying behind trees etc. It was a nice little setup. You could run it trivially on a laptop these days, but back then it took a workstation costing about $20k.

It was the 1980's simulator i used. I remember some of the equipment using 12in floppy disks

    • @skerne I probably helped with the upgrade to that then.

  • Im guessing all the airlines which fly out of Heathrow will be shitting themselves!

    • @Zeb Exactly, I will be out for the time they got these beasts set up in London..

    • @Zeb They will have clearly designated flight corridors. Probably already do in fact. I'm guessing there won't be many squaddies named Mohammed manning the missile batteries.

There are last line of defense missiles permanently in Washington DC including secret service operated stinger missiles on the Whitehouse roof. There are also stingers stationed in Manhattan. There was even a Secret Service stinger missile IN the WTC when it collapsed.

    • @dorbie Strange you should mention it,but i had problems a couple of years ago in my works. With a muslim guy, turns out he was ex British navy, worked on misssiles, and had a degree in micro electronics. He had also served 8yrs in jail for blowing his shop up.Many a true thing, is said in jest!

  • We need to be seen to be doing something about the threat.

NO the threat is not a hijacked passenger plane.

The threat is unmanned aerial vehicles/small planes/helicopters/remote controlled planes and heli's.

ANYONE can walk into a shop, buy a radio controlled toy and strap something nasty to it. Fly it into the stadium.

The Rapier system is a DETERRENT! As it is in the Falklands.

    IT WILL NEVER BE FIRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is utter bullshit propaganda. Any air to ground attack could be negated long before it hit London. Putting missile systems on top of London roof's??? All that would do is insure debris hit residential area's. Shame on Britain for heightening paranoia. Surely they should be concentrating on small cells, with improvised IED's? Rather than a sophisticated military attack! Entirely see-through bullshit from our nanny state!

    • @NoGodButAlan Bollocks. Heathrow and Gatwick are right there.

    • @NoGodButAlan

Who's talking about sophisticated military attacks?? Did you see the video about Greenpeace dropping smoke bombs onto that French nuclear powerplant? That's all somebody would need to spark a mass panic.

But I'm with you on needless hightening of the paranoia - some well-hidden Stingers would help against a powered paraglider, too.

Rapiers range is not that good, its a last resort.

      Posted May-4-2012 By

    • @skerne It may not be that good but that is irrelevant, I was posting in response to someone who claimed that all threats could be eliminated prior to reaching the stadium, and that claim was simply WRONG. The target is minutes from two major airports and major congested flight routes.

4 major airports actually - Heathrow, Gatwick, Stanstead & London City.
