According to the Flemish nationalists of the party N-VA, Michel Daerden was drunk at the time of his speech speech in early January, 2010. This was not the first time....

"Michel Daerden was the subject of special attention after the Belgian municipal elections of 2006. Excerpts of his post-election interview on RTBF and on local television CTS-TV Liège, where he appears intoxicated, were circulated widely on Youtube, becoming some of the most-watched videos among both French- and Dutch-speaking Internet users in Belgium. A week later Daerden was asked on the TV show Mise au Point whether he had had too much to drink at that time. His humorous response was a Falstaff-style classic, Pas plus que d'habitude (No more than usual).

Nonetheless, his competence has not been seriously doubted and according to Florence Coppenolle, the spokesman of the Socialist Party President Elio Di Rupo, «even opponents of PS hail his perfection, his genius, his mastery of figures». Michel Daerden blames "psychomotor problems" and dyslexia for the slowness of his speech. In January 2010 he again appeared drunk when giving a reply in the Belgian Senate, causing problems for the Prime Minister."
