Extreme Knife Restoration Project
 Part of channel(s): Liveleakers (promoted)

Pretty bad damage to these blades due to a fire... but they can be restored.

This will be the biggest challenge I've ever come across on a restoration job. A lot of work... but it'll be an privilege to return these pieces, fully restored, to the owner.

Cost of restoring these three items: $350 - $400.

Returning a treasured item to it's owner: Priceless

  • Man, what a tragic story. I'm sure this job will be done with a great deal of pride. You're a good man, Event.

  • It may seem pointless to spend any effort on some knives ruined in a fire but top end chef's cutlery may actually be worth it.
Tools of the trade, after thirty years no doubt have become a natural extension of the chef himself.
Not my cup of tea but I can certainly see the value here, I say go for it.

  • It's pretty cool that you have the honor and ability to restore someones prized possessions, sad to hear of your neighbors losses as well.

  • I would have liked to have seen the knives after the restoration on the same clip.

  • Good luck with your project. Nice that you're giving this guy a little bit of his life back.
Now I hope you don't mind the following question:

I picked up a Spanish Mauser bayonet (early thirties) and there was so much grease in the scabbard that I didn't notice that the point was bent back. How much heat would I need to bend it back without damaging the blade?

    • @pisscookie Maybe??

Hold the far end of the blade in vise grips. Heat the bent area to royal blue with a torch.
Use your choice of hammer and an anvil or strike plate to straighten the blade while it is still royal blue, or put the blade in a bench vise and bend it. The steel is in a relaxed condition at that color and will straighten fairly easily.
Scuff the entire blade with a 24-grit wheel on your right angle grinder. Reheat the entire blade to royal blue, and allow it to air cool slowly. More..

    • @dankmofo

Much appreciated. I know it's from the Spanish Civil War, don't know how it got that way, but it would have required a considerable amount of force.

  • That meat clever could take the head off an oxen at 30 paces.

Will be interested to see the final outcome of those charred beasts. Voted.
