This is the X-15A-2 flight. They took the X-15-2 that McKay made a nice trench in the landing strip and re-built it. A little duct tape and a new coat of paint and it was good as new.



It had what was called an "ablative" coating. It was designed to dissipate heat and burn off first if required. Look at the Saturn rockets. Guess who tested it first.
