    • the lead engineer was laughed at for 20 years after he submitted the design in 73.

pilots didn't even want to fly the thing until the early 2000's.

the a-10 represents a design philosophy that has been lost completely in the halls of the pentagon. meant to fight in the high intensity battlefield of cold war Germany during a soviet strategic offensive. its main attributes were ease of "maintainability" and "manufacture" (replacement), its niche was the nightmare extended eur More..

    • Hell yeah.

Just got to love the grumble of the Gat "after" the rounds have hit the target. And to think that that grumble is the last thing they hear amidst their own and their mates screams of agony.

    • There's also nothing else really like it is there?
I can't think of a Russian, British or French equivalent.

The only thing that remotely comes to mind is the Stuka dive bomber at Kursk in 1943 when the Germans took away the bombs and fitted cannon especially for hitting Russian tanks. Was also very effective

    • The Comanche was awesome, but it doesn't seem like our Longbows will be ineffective for another 30 years. That money is better spent on UAVs and the Osprey IMO. Armed versions of the Osprey may completely replace traditional helicopters.

Those little leap-frogging robots are important too. There's no reason a squad shouldn't have a small robot that they can deploy themselves. It's the future, but we have the technology now. The ultimate way to avoid IEDs, is to have soldiers piloting vehicles f More..

  • I was out with my husband fishing in a high desert canyon one time, and two of them flew through the canyon. Amazing sight. They were soooo low and appeared to be going soooo slow. Couldn't grab the camera fast enough though, dang it.

  • When the A-10 first come and start shooting, the Afghani soldier says "Jan, Jan"

In Persian "Jan" means "My love"

  • I read an interview with the surviving British soldiers of a friendly fire incident when US A-10s just unleashed on British vehicles in Basra, I think. The guy said it was the worst experience of his life, hearing that roar and seeing its effects all around him. The roar alone is psychologically terrifying. Scary stuff.
