.Ever heard of Auckland's Coast to Coast walkway?

I hadn't, until I saw on Twitter that it had made a global list of the top 10 city walks – right up there with London's Thames path and New York's Central Park.

Online travel guide BootsnAll named its pick of the 10 best city walks this month to coincide with Green Week, a tribute to sustainable travel and ecotourism.

Thinking I must have missed something in my 20-something years living in the City of Sails, I asked around the Yahoo! New Zealand office – and no-one else had heard of the coast to coast walkway either.

According to http://www.newzealand.com, it's a 16-kilometre, signposted walk from the downtown waterfront on the Waitemata Harbour to the seaside suburb of Onehunga, on the Manukau.

BootsnAll blows its trumpet as "one of the few places in the world where you can literally walk from one ocean to another in less than a day".

It takes you through city landmarks like Albert Park and the Domain, and up Mt Eden and the One Tree Hill summit for fabulous 360-degree views.

If you're starting in the city, you might as well walk a bit further, cross the old Mangere Bridge and park up for a coffee or beer in Mangere Bridge village.

Otherwise start from Onehunga and head north so you can end your walk with sundowners at the Viaduct Harbour.

Now we just need some fine weather so I can knock this bastard off one Sunday.

The 10 best city walks according to BootsnAll are:

1. Auckland's Coast to Coast walkway
2. London's Thames path
3. Istanbul's old city walls
4. Cape Town's Table Mountain
5. Hong Kong's Dragon's Back Trail
6. Rio de Janeiro's Corcovado Mountain
7. Mt Esja, Reykjavik
8. Prague's Royal Route
9. New York, Central Park
10. Vancouver's Seawall

  • I've never done the actual walk - heaven forfend I would abandon the Waitakeries and their myriad muddy walks.

However I'm sure I've done most of it at one time or another.

Being an ex-Aucklander my response is 'Meh'

    • @ThePersuader If Americans are as fat and stupid as you insecure clowns think then WHY did we totally fuck your ass without lube in the Olympics AND Land on Mars in the same week? It must really suck to be so jealous and insecure of Americans :)

  • they should have added what would have to be the undisputed best walks in New Zealand and in fact the world #1 would be Milford Track (South Island NZ) and the most amazing for thrills is #2 the Tongariro crossing - its an all day hike crossing 3 active volcanoes in the central North Island of NZ

      Sounds great.

The Tamaki walk goes all the way the St Heliers, up above Lady's beach and you can start it from Herne bay and walk under the harbor bridge past West Heaven marina, but I prefer cycling that one...

Isn't Tongariro erupting at the moment?

Maybe you should do Egmont/Taranaki instead?
