that must be the most beautiful noise an aircraft could ever make!

Glorious old bird.I know it was just a workhorse for carrying as many bombs as possible, but i still think its the best looking prop bomber.

Jet engines are ok but the sound of a Merlin beats them all hands down

one of these very very beautiful planes in history. Though I must admit that I have seen nicer paintings before.

my uncle (now dead) flew Mitchels in WW2 ... didn't do his hearing any good at all and I seem to remember his most used word was "pardon?"

What is the science behind the start-up sequence? I noticed the 4 engined bombers usually seem to start in 3-4-2-1 order.

@VorpalVA It depends on the aircraft but many of them have an auxiliary generator, on one engine only, that can assist starting the other engines. Often true for jets, too, though they use "bleed air" to spin the turbines of the other engines.

yeah one those was shot down right beside my village in ww2.
the whole village ran up to the crashshite. pilots thought they get lynched but all the people wanted was the fuel. fuel meant stuff to change against bread, meat etc

When I see one I'm allways thinking of the dambusters mission to germany in WWII. Last year I was at the edersee (with one of the targeted dams). The lake has a very sharp bend and fairly steep slopes. They must have been flying those planes like fighters in order to make a proper approach (@ 8m altitude)! Sends shivers down my spine.
