CLEVELAND - A Cleveland police officer was shot early Thursday morning while confronting a suspect.
The incident occurred outside of a home on Thompkins Avenue around midnight. The officer, Anthony Sauto, suffered a gunshot wound in the thigh and was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center, where he was treated and released for his injuries.
The incident started with a suspicious car investigation at West 83 Street and Lorain. While police were investigating, someone fired three shots at a Cleveland officers, hitting Sauto in the leg.
A foot pursuit ensued, ending in the backyard of a home on Thompkins Avenue, where police shot and killed the man about a block away from the original shots being fired. Police said that the man fired more rounds at police before he was killed.
The shooter was using a Mac 9 handgun that held 30 rounds, and police said he had the gun strapped around
