Canton police say the Sunday morning beating was caught on a neighborhood Crime Watch video and they’re using the tape to help identify Anderson’s attackers.

Anderson, who lived in the 1400 block of Rowland Avenue NE, was walking south on Rowland about a block from his home before 1 a.m. Sunday when a car carrying at least three men pulled up after turning onto Rowland Avenue from 14th Street NE, the video shows.

Anderson appears on the video to have sensed he was in danger and is seen running north away from the vehicle. The video then shows one of the three men tackling Anderson at the southwest corner of Rowland and 14th.

The three began beating Anderson — about 30 yards south of his home.

“It is really vicious,” said Capt. Bruce Lawver, a Canton police detective. “This man was beaten by three individuals. From all indications we get, he was a good guy. We have nothing to indicate this was brought on by the victim.”

The three then left and returned to the scene about nine minutes later, according to police. They appeared to be checking on Anderson’s condition.

One of the three can be heard on the recording saying, “call the ambulance.”

At about the same time, two pedestrians approached while walking west on 14th Street NE. One of the pedestrians, a woman, called 911, police said.
