Cane Hill Asylum, in Coulsdon, Surrey, has a reputation for being one of the most impressive and atmospheric Victorian asylums in the UK.

Completed in 1882, Cane Hill held around 2000 patients at its peak, including a number of famous ones given its proximity to London. However, the 1980s move towards care in the community and with all the grand asylums closing, its days were numbered and it finally shut in 1991.
