(sorry about the music, not my creation) Kyokushin is a recently developed style of karate, founded in 1964 by Masutatsu Oyama that eliminates the complicated and needless aspects of older styles and emhpasizes realistic combat and practical training methods. As well as focusing on physical toughness, being able to take a hit, and padless, full contact sparing and tournaments.

It was at the beginning of the concept of real world fighting rather than mindless kata, and helped along the philosphy that led to development of new, mixed styles and MMA tournaments.
