@Harve While it looks (and sound!) ridiculous, i think the purpose of this exercise is not shooting training (i am sure they make that with real bullets) but to train the soldiers in the most important military requirement:..."hump that gear for a day in that sun"! (or something like that, with a final attack/defense maneuver)
When i was in the Greek military (and when in common exercises with other NATO forces like USA) we used blanks for this kind of training but that is not so cruci More..

Besides it is nice to see a well disciplined force engaging the enemy with sustained burst and not pray and spray.
