  • First: Interesting bit of history.

    Second: Today unions suck.

Thirdly: Flash, don't lean back or stand up. That overhead fan is going to fuck you up, Bro.

  • Labor Day is the single Federal holiday in which Americans are least likely to bother hanging out the flag in celebration.

      For good reason.
I think the roots of this holiday are based in Comminty-ism (Communism).

Johan1054, if anyone can change my mind about this you can. Please, tell me how this not a Communist Holiday in America.

      I would if I could.

      But I can't.

      So I won't.

  • Well that was interesting. Unions had their place once. Now they are encouraging companies to seek labor outside U.S. Thumb me down all you want people, unions today are costing us jobs and money.

I dunno if " I'm a worker then I'd love to be in one."

When I was 17 I worked at "Lumberjack" - a kind of Home Depot back then. There was a tremendous pressure to join the union - a lot of intimidation. I didn't join because of the expense, but there was a constant pressure/intimidation (almost threats) to join. I think looking for other jobs around that age I came across an opening at a grocery store as a butcher. For that job I was told I HAD to join t More..

    • @RickBond Union's can also have a crushing affect on competition...

In France where I reside its very hard for people to start up businesses and price the way they want to in all sorts of trades from building to professional services...why? Because a union in that area will cry foul, unfair advantage etc.

Thus no one starts companies in France...t'would be suicide

Someone needs to let the Unions know that business is not fair. The company I work for is growing stupid fast because we dropped all fees for members, but charge the BEEJEZUS out of nonmembers.

  • Unions have created more Holidays than jobs.

They served an important purpose at one time.
The ideal should never be taken lightly.
That said, unions are the cancer of our vaunted health system.
Socialists here mandate union only job contracts.
Gotta go, someone is at the door again........

      'Yes, can I help you?'

      'Do you support LOCAL 555?'

      'I'm not sure"
'*SMACK, KICK SLAP PUNCH KICK SLAP PUNCH SPIT ...breath*

      'ya ...I ......see.....your..point

I agree. Unions did a great job in bringing Labor Laws into the United Sates. The Department of Labor was created to look out for the American Worker.
Today, the Union has become a leech on business to justify its own existence.
In the 21st Century, Unions do more Harm than Good.

  • Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but if you apply the same vitriol to people like pullman as you do the unions, then it is very plain to see that people like pullman used and abused the people; caring not whether they lived or died as long as they clocked in. Don't tell me that's not the case because contemporary writers of the time even noticed it (Dickens) and history is full of it.

I think pullman tried his experiment about the same time as Bournville (Cadbury's) and his model village for the More..

I do not consider Dickens a Contemporary writer (outside of a University Campus).
Plans to get richer are not sinister, they are Universal.

    • @Flashovr Sure, but its the moral issue...what means justify the ends...
Would you want to get rich on the toil of broken backs?

      Life's too short to be a c'nt...:)

  • The origins of Labour Day can be traced back to April 15, 1872, when the Toronto Trades Assembly organized Canada's first significant demonstration for worker's rights.

Labour Day was originally celebrated in the spring but it was moved to the fall after 1894. A similar holiday, Labor Day is held on the same day in the United States of America. Canadian trade unions are proud that this holiday was inspired by their efforts to improve workers' rights. Many countries have a holiday to celebrate w More..

  • Unions did a great job of creating protections for workers, but unfortunately unions have become exactly what they fought against all those decades ago, big business.

      Well said Sir, Well said.

I would say, Unions realized Power, and Power corrupts. Thus, Unions became Corrupt with Power.

  • Many disagree, but I honestly think that the UK is far better off for having crushed the Unions back in the 1980's...

The one's that live on, Teachers, Public workers etc. show a total lack of realism about the State, economy and their role within it
