Ortodox soldiers kill Bedouin's camel

Haredi (ortodox) troops settle dispute with Bedouin by shooting his camel to death

Hanan Greenberg Published: 05.21.10, 21:43 / Israel News

Three IDF soldiers belonging to the Nahal Haredi battalion shot and killed a camel in the Jordan Rift Valley Friday following a dispute with a local Bedouin.

The Bedouin said the soldiers were trespassing through his property. A formal complaint was handed over to the IDF through the Civil Administration.

The three soldiers involved in the incident left their base without permission around 6 pm Friday in order to tour the area. They passed by a local Bedouin resident and entered his tent.

Following an argument that lasted several minutes, the soldiers left the tent, but one of them kneeled down and fired at the camel.

The Bedouin immediately phoned Israeli Civil Administration officials and reported the incident. The Administration's representatives, accompanied by Israel's Nature Reserve Authority members, rushed to the area and attempted to save the camel's life. However, it was gravely hurt and died at the site.

Army to deal with 'grave incident'

A report on the incident was relayed to the Nahal Brigade, to the Kfir Division, and to the Military Police. The Civil Administration's chief, Brigadier General Yoav Mordechai, spoke with senior Palestinian officials in the Jericho area and pledged to look into and deal with the incident.

The Bedouin camel-owner will be summoned to the Coordination and Liaison office in Jericho Sunday in order to provide his account of the incident. He is also expected to file a lawsuit against the soldiers in order to receive compensation.

Military officials said the incident was grave and will be dealt with through disciplinary action.

  • A mate of mine was on guard in Aden when five A-Rabs walked across the end of the airfield lay their 2 camels down, hunkered in behind them and started to shoot at him.
He got down in his sandbag bunker and threw 2 grenades.
The next he heard were the A-Rabs shouting "Comrade, comrade". He poked his nose out and all five of them stood up with hands raised, and he marched them off to the guardroom. Unfortunately the 2 camels died from shrapnel wounds.

    This is a rue story.

  • IDF has one battalion which is based on ortodox which volunteer to serve in the army.

this report in hebrew got hundreds replies by israelis, almost all of them are furios at the soldiers which did it. the public here is allready fed up by the behavior of the ortodox, specially during the last week. the fact that one of them shot to death a defensless animal got them in the heart of a public lincying and crucification.

    • You are confusing two different English words. I think you mean to write "charedi" (ultra-orthodox, the most extreme groups that are rioting) instead of "orthodox". The Israeli army is full of "regular orthodox", called da'ati leumi (Religion Zionists, similar to Modern Orthodox in the USA) guys - at one point, half the officers were da'ati leumi, and those guys often volunteer for the most dangerous special combat units. These are educated, dedicated, decent peo More..

    • thnks!

its simply because i reffer to the "dati leumi" as national relligious and the haredim as ortodox/ultra-ortodox.

ive noticed that the media in english use the phrase ultra-ortodox for the haredim, but i prefer to use "ortodox" in short.

if it is a mistake like you say then ill try to change it next times.

    • So what do you class the NK?
Alot of press reports name them as Haredim....when in actual fact most Haredim want nothing to do with them.
They also instigate alot of the problems intentional, to give the ultra orthodox a bad name.

  • This story isnt very clear.
Its only based on the Bedouins account, and Hanan Greenberg is similar to Ali Waked, in that they always empathize with the Arabs.
Im not saying the soldiers didnt do it, but until i hear both sides i an not going to judge.
As far as we know, the camel might of been sick and it could be just a case of more bogus Arab claims for compensation.
Similar to how they torch their own cars, name the settlers and then claim on insurance.
But i do find it difficult to comprehen More..

    • i agrree that this story seems to be missing some info (why did the soldiers went inside the tent, what were this soldiers and the bedouin arguing about and why the hell the soldier shot the camel) but we can agrree 2 basic things-
      1. no matter what heppened in the tent, nothing can justify shooting a camel to death.
      2. the army also responded to it and said it takes the incident very gravly. meaning somthing did heppened and ther soldiers seems to be responsible to it.
