IT'S more than 12 metres long and is capable of shooting rounds 24km at seven times the speed of sound.
Video footage of the US Navy testing an electromagnetic rail gun shows the devastating power of a weapon it claims is a game-changer.
The gun uses magnetic field and electric current to fire missiles and is being developed at the Naval Surface Warfare Centre in Virginia.
The problem with the gun at the moment is that it doesn't yet have the cooling systems that will allow it to be fired repetitively without destroying the barrel.
Roger Ellis, who is heading the development, the weapon's power was such it wouldn't need to fire a missile to cause lethal damage - a blunt object would do just as well.
The gun has so far cost the US about $US240 million.
