An Israel Defense Force court on Sunday sentenced a soldier to 20 months in jail for stealing with intent to sell an army-issued rifle. The soldier was given an additional 20-month suspended sentence.
Presiding Judge Erez Efrat wrote in his ruling that that he had issued a particularly harsh sentence as precedent to discourage future acts of this kind. He declared in his verdict said that the IDF must not tolerate those who abuse the army's trust and endanger the public.
The offending soldier, as well as two others who have yet to be sentenced, buried the rifle outside of an Israel Air Force base with the intention of retrieving it in order to sell it.
The rifle was found three months later in the same location, after one of the soldiers disclosed the affair.
