The colander system was actually an ingenious design. The large dome that would encase Tel Aviv in the event of a missile strike would allow for outgoing missiles and planes to fly through appropriately sized perforations in the tin shielding. Meanwhile, incoming missiles and planes would not know the specific locations of the holes, and therefore would effectively be stopped by the colander.
I think this method was far greater than the modern "giant fan" method, which is too complex More..
