NASA Morpheus Lander Free Flight and Explosion
NASA's project Morpheus, a lander designed to carry heavy cargo to the moon, has crashed and exploded at Kennedy Space Center.
Designed to carry up to 1,100 pounds, the project was undergoing a free-flight test today when it caught fire and blew up.
Morpheus is fueled by liquid oxygen and methane — two fuels that
could someday be extracted from materials found on the moon and mars.

Yeah, like they tested the mirror on Hubble before it was launched?

@EdselFord if you do the research the errors were mainly the fault of the polishing company ignoring its own tests showing the mirrors were defective. NASA failed by not reviewing the tests (due to funding problems for the project) before installing the mirrors in the final assembly.

@CatJuggler
I could live like a king for the rest of my life with that kind of money and invest it and grow it and make my entire family rich. It's still kinda surprising that that project was ONLY 7 million dollars, it's pretty cheap in the grand scheme of space expenses.

@lucidx1
Yes it was cheap by standards... but very expensive for what it was..
And I agree that 7 million would set up you and me both!

God... We really suck now... We had these problems figured out just fine 45 years ago when computers had 16k of ram and ran on 2 amps. Jesus Christ. WTF is wrong with us?

@TheMule Nobody else has been even remotely as successful. It's new technology being developed, these failures are expected to happen.
Russia is 0 for 19 in Mars missions. They just had their latest attempt burn up without leaving Earth orbit. 7 of 8 of our lander missions to Mars have been successful (wildly successful, exceeding all realistic expectations).

Ah, it reminds me of the good ol days with the early Apollo rocket tests. I love rockets. No technology in the world is more bi-polar. Rockets either succeed amazingly or fail spectacularly.

...drat...
...haven't they been trying to perfect one of these craft since the space program began?...
...this looks very much like some of their mid-60's prototypes...

Engine issue or maybe weight issue? These things happen so let's not freak out about. They'll learn from it and carry on.

Looks like a failed thruster. The others should have shut down but I guess that wasn't part of the programming.
