From Brian Gaunt....The Makhonine MAK 10 was a research aircraft which was built to investigate the possibility of reducing the surface area of a wing in flight and thereby considerably increase the aircraft's maximum flying speed.Monsieur Jean Makhonine achieved this in 1931 with his 'telescopic'wing.
The maximum wingspan was 69 feet and the minimum span was 43 feet when the outer wing sections were telescoped. The wing area on Makhonine's prototype could be reduced from 355 square feet to 204 s More..

@ronjon Thumbs up on the great info. Love any air craft. I worked on the flight deck of the USS America 1964-65 AMEA 24hr flights while the Jews and the Arabs went at it.

that's a very odd idea. I would have never though of doing something like that with a wing..
1) it's drastically limits how thin you can make your wing increasing your drag.
2) It's a crazy Idea.

Looks like a racing version of the French MAK-10.
Racing aeroplanes was very big in the 1920-30's. A bit like Formula 1 today.

I can't tell you what model this is or who built it but I think this is very likely a one-off prototype. Looks like they're experimenting with variable wing technology for greater speed.

Mak-10, short for Makhonine. French, that should be enough to look it up.

What kind?
Old kind.
j/k, couldn't resist.
Seems the concensus is that it is a Makhonine MAK-10.
