Simple physics. P-waves are the first to arrive from an earthquake, arriving at the earths surface from mere seconds after the seismic-event up to 1.5 minutes after the event.
This pressure-wave is easily detectable by animals, causing many to react before the s-wave arrives, followed by ground-roll (Rayleigh waves).

My mom told me that the 2001 6.8 earthquake we had in the seattle area, the cats went booking right before it happened. Because of this, I always listen to my kitties now. If they get freaked out, I pay attention. Specially since I live closer (in Puyallup) to Mt Rainier, which is one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world. so, ALWAYS pay attention to animals. always.
