A suicide bomber has blown himself up near a patrol of US-led forces in the Khost province in Afghanistan killing 13 US servicemen.

Taliban spokesman Zabihollah Mojahed relayed this information in a short telephone conversation with IRIB's Tehran-based Pashtu Radio.

In another development, Taliban forces have ambushed two tanks of foreign troopers in Kandahar province and destroyed them, another Taliban spokesperson, Qari Yousef, told the same radio station.

Several mortar launchers have been fired at Kandahar airport where US troops are stationed, the source said.

These reports have not been verified by any other source.

War-torn Afghanistan has seen over 600 roadside bombs and 130 suicide attacks since January this year, indicating a 30 percent increase when compared to the same period last year. This is according to UN statistics released in mid-October.

Rising militancy-related violent incidents in Afghanistan have killed over 5,800 people so far this year.
