Flying in Switzerland / Birdstrike on my first solo flight
 Part of channel(s): Liveleakers (promoted)

As above. A few pics to show you guys why I love flying in switzerland! There's also a video of my first solo flight with birdstrike below. More pics and videos of flying in the alps will come as soon as the weather gets better in spring.

Video description:
This is my first video on LL. Don't expect crash action! It might be boring for those of you who aren't interested in aviation. Birdstrike at 0:12

The video was taken with a GoPro HD on my first flight without the flight instructor sitting next to me.

As you can see at 0:12, I've managet it to hit a pretty big bird (It was bigger than a crow. Can't tell what it was though...) on my first solo flight. As I saw the bird it was too late to avoid it already and heavy control inputs are dangerous anyway at low speeds. Luckily, the demage was minor. Blood, feathers and a few dents and cracks on the right hand landing gear covers - nothing duct tape couldn't fix.

Happy landings to all pilots out there!

  • Evidently that was the bird's first flight too.

    • @Carguyinok You are welcome and thanks! Sharing it with others makes flying even more exciting I think. There's enough evil in this world so let's share the good stuff!

  • What an ugly country Switzerland is, no vast empty deserts with muslims shouting snackbars and burning rubble cities. How do they keep their sanity with all those hiddeous snow capped mountains and vast forests, and peaceful villages?

Trust me. It's no big deal, but having said that - it is not for your random stupid female either. You do need to have a bunch of common sense and just know how shit works.

My first solo was at age 15 at a busy airport near Los Angeles. The smog was so bad that sometimes it was hard to find the place. No such thing as GPS back then. Something called a VORTEC.

I hated that shit but WTF - I did it. I had my pilot license before my driver license.

    • @damnjet For me it wasn't scary and it sure would be wrong to go for the first solo flight if you are scared. As GammaZetaTau said: The first solo usually contains a few circuits around the airport with touch and go full stops and taxi back to holding point for another departure. During instruction flights, you make an awfull lot of circuitd so it's nothing new. Also, ther controller here in Grenchen knows if someone has his first solo and gives instructions slow and clearly. It was great fun!

  • Way to maintain your composure!

  • Well done! You kept your composure and landed nicely. More impressive is that you did so on your first solo.

    • @RickBond Thanks mate! I could do so not least because I have a very good flight instructor who let me do the landings from the beginning of training.

Mine had nerves of steel. During emergency practice landings I could hear the weeds hitting the landing gear when he finally told me to "go around". I thought for sure he was actually going to make me land the plane in a vacant field...

Wow, sounds awesome! I would have been scared a bit though... But from this kind of instructors you learn the most. Mine didn't let me go that low during emergency training but he never lost his nerves during my first landings. He used to take his hands completely away from the controls and even if he saw that it's going to be a hard touch down he didn't intervene.

  • We need to regulate birds. They have no place in the sky.

  • Congrats on first flight! I always wanted to do that, never had the time or money. Good job - can't help the bird strike though!

    • @HuskyTrail2019

Here's an idea. Go take 5-10 hours of flight instruction. Go ahead. DO IT.

Trust me. You will get it out of your system and be able to say that you did it.

Those small planes make no sense. By the time you jack around on both ends you could have driven there faster.

Have fun!! DO IT. Life is too GOTDAMN short. Tell your GOTDAMN wife that it is something you need to do.

    NICE LANDING BUDDY!!

My first ten landings bent the gear every time!!

  • No doubt the most exciting event in Switzerland of that day.

    • @devries A cloud of swiss cheese farts made it's way to another town of cheese farts which mixed and fused to form a super fart cloud which knocked out a chinese satellite. Was a close call for nuclear war. I'd say that was a bigger story that day.

    • @devries Yeah, the rest of us were counting our money. Being the richest country in the world sucks.

  • It was quite dusky, and the airfield was totally empty when I did my first solo. My instructor was with me doing circuits of the airfield and when we landed he said, 'take care of her,' and he got out. I was sitting there shitting myself thinking he was kidding, but sure enough, a few minutes later I was at 1000 feet on my own. I was comming in for my first solo landing. I had it lined up nicely, and when I was about fifty feet from the tarmac a deer ran in front of me. I pulled her up, and whac More..
