Huge Fireworks Explosion Rocks Spain Spectacle

The loose firework in the town of Elche set off the thousands of others stored in the tower, sending streams of sparks and burning material onto people gathered below for a festival.

A spokeswoman for Elche town hall said three firework operators were hospitalised for serious burns while 25 people were treated for minor injuries.

The Mayor of Elche, Mercedes Alonso, was jeered by the crowds as she left the event.

    • @elmerfudd13 Why don't you look at your own problems, firstly? Do you really have so much money in order to keep spending Javelin Missiles on dirt, hills and generaly empty areas?

A few fireworks won't hurt anyone indirectly... 'cause directly, we just saw :P

At least we don't destroy and loot our cities in riots like your civilized youth. And when they don't do that, they come to Spain to get drunk and throw themselves from their hotel balconies.

Maybe you should worry more about your own problems and stop believing you are the bellybutton of the world.

And, by the way, you should also worry about your own economy, which is close to shambles too.

    • @MrRedshifter the fireworks arnt usually fully payed by the townhall, the people wo take part in the paradaes and fiestas normally have to pay to do so, and the money the pay goes towards their food, drink, costumes, the historical side of it is like when the scottish burn a viking ship... much the same effect

  • So the Spain-tards jeered the mayor?

  • This seems to be happening more and more often these days. The older generation is retiring, and they are being replaced by significantly less competent people. Fireworks safety: it's not rocket science. Stuff like this only happens when you break the clearly-defined rules. It's clear proof that the people in charge of the fireworks are incompetent, no matter what their jobs are. The Mayor hired the company, the company hired workers, and the workers don't know how to do their jobs. Dumbas More..

      Actually, it is. lol

Spot on. It seems the pyrotechnic company was cheaper than the one used the previous year, due to the crisis. And they failed to cover the fireworks of the tower with a canvas, a simple measure that would have prevented the outcome.

    • @daleastor Uh, no. Fireworks are not cutting-edge technology with no margin for error. Fireworks have been around forever and safety while working around them is a solved problem.

DURR DURR it flies in the air and therefore is the same as space travel DURR DURR jeez attitudes like yours (and everyone who thumbed you) are part of the problem.

Holy shit, man. I was being this little thing called "funny". Are you familiar with it?

But here, to define further why I found the use of that well known expression/phrase humorous, I'll use this dumb little trick - I usually don't do this DOUCHEY little defintion cut/paste thing, but for you I'll make an exception:

      ROCKET

      rock·et/ˈräkit/
      Noun:
A cylindrical projectile that can be propelled to a great height or distance by the combustion of its contents.

      (of More..

One more thing, and more LOL:

"Fireworks have been around forever and safety while working around them is a solved problem"

Well, according to this video, they are NOT YET "solved".

Your comments a regular cornucopia of hilarity. Keep 'em comin'! ;)

  • I guess that's one tower they won't be throwing any donkeys off.

Don't they watch Blue Peter? You should always keep the lid on your tin of fireworks to avoid stray sparks, every fucker knows that.

  • Chance of fire actually raining down on your head? Doesn't it just make the show more exciting? Always look on the bright side of life.

    Posted Aug-14-2012 By

    (2)

  • Gotta admit, it's far more exciting when there's no health & safety involved.

  • I guess fireworks are inherently dangerous and theres always a risk of a massive albeit pretty explosion.
