I think the first shot hit the ground sent up a bit of shrapnel and he got nicked on the leg. It probably hurt like a sumbitch and he thought he was shot but then realized he wasn't so he got up and left? I dunno that's all I can guess

There was a chunk of something in his leg he smacked @0:18. Maybe a piece of shrapnel? Kind of looks like he hit it (too hot?) loose and then tossed it.
