FreeFly Skydive Followed By a Main Parachute Failure... and Reserve Ride

This is a nice little freefly (sit-fly) skydive ruined by the failure of the main canopy on deployment. Every now and again, just when you think the freefall is over, the damn main canopy reminds you to keep on your toes even when everything is supposed to slow down. This guy gets nailed by his risers when he cut away so he got a little animated. He had a great reaction to the failure and cut away before it tossed him around too much. He did have a Skyhook installed so the reserve deployment was almost immediate. turn your volume down a bit, it gets loud up there.

  • Skydive Dallas at Whitewright field. I've jumped & trained there. Good save, shame the cloud busting fogged up the lens.

Looks like another case of a high performance canopy turning simple line twists into a emergency cutaway.

  • I am curious as to what the cutaway procedure entails. How it's done, what mechanism, etc.

...not that I would ever willingly exit a perfectly good airplane while aloft. I'm just curious.

    • @Blech -In layman's terms: After deploying your main canopy pilot chute (The pilot pulls the main parachute closing pin using wind resistance), if after about 3 seconds your main doesn't begin to deploy or, if your main canopy deploys and starts a violent spin or gets tangled, the reserve deployment should begin. The first step is to pull your cutaway handle, usually found on your right forward harness. This disconnects the risers (the harness to parachute line connectors) from you parachute ret More..

    • @PyneOil Thank you very much, Pyne.

I imagined the Skyhook performed the function you described, but now I have a better idea of how it is accomplished mechanically.

Maybe I'll try it someday. 'Til then I'll stick with indoors at the Paraclete XP. Happy landings!

    • @Blech It uses a 3-ring cutaway on each riser which can also deploy the reserve using an RSL. Here's the wikipedia page I created describing the cutaway mechanism:

    • @PyneOil Wikipedia has a whole section of the 3-ring release mechanism, not just an animation in the parachute section.
