Tales from the Darkside ran for 89 episodes in four broadcast seasons between 1983 and 1988. There was also a Tales from the Darkside movie in 1990. If you liked Twilight zone, Night gallery, The Outer Limits, Tales From The Crypt, Amazing Stories, Freddy's Nightmares and other series like that then this is a must see. (Some consider the show Monsters in 1988 a spinoff of this series)

The show was loosely based on George A Romero's horror anthology film Creepshow which was written by Stephen King. King wrote two episodes for this series also. Since Warner Bros owned some aspects of Creepshow the series was taken out a new door by Laurel Entertainment. The show is an homage to the horror comics of the 1950's like Tales From The Crypt, The Vault of Horror etc.

About the DVD release. Once again overbearing copyright is the villain of the day. Each episode had it's own music score which perfectly matched its unique character. It was a visceral part of the feeling of the show. In an attempt to reduce their costs to increase profit they decided to go with different music on the DVD release. If you're a diehard fan looking to collect the show because you loved it once upon a time I can't recommend it. If you're just looking for a good show to watch then it should be fine.

Old VHS collections of the show do have the original music scores intact, you can get them at places like ebay for a few bucks. Or maybe keep your eyes open at yard sales, scoop 'em up at 10 for $1 and resell them online to collectors.

Bit of trivia. Actor Vic Tayback (Mel the cook from the show Alice) appeared in the first and last episodes.
