Tales from the Darkside ran for 89 episodes in four broadcast seasons between 1983 and 1988. There was also a Tales from the Darkside movie in 1990. If you liked Twilight zone, Night gallery, The Outer Limits, Tales From The Crypt, Amazing Stories, Freddy's Nightmares and other series like that then this is a must see. (Some consider the show Monsters in 1988 a spinoff of this series)

The show was loosely based on George A Romero's horror anthology film Creepshow which was written by Stephen King. King wrote two episodes for this series also. Since Warner Bros owned some aspects of Creepshow the series was taken out a new door by Laurel Entertainment. The show is an homage to the horror comics of the 1950's like Tales From The Crypt, The Vault of Horror etc.

About the DVD release. Once again overbearing copyright is the villain of the day. Each episode had it's own music score which perfectly matched its unique character. It was a visceral part of the feeling of the show. In an attempt to reduce their costs to increase profit they decided to go with different music on the DVD release. If you're a diehard fan looking to collect the show because you loved it once upon a time I can't recommend it. If you're just looking for a good show to watch then it should be fine.

Old VHS collections of the show do have the original music scores intact, you can get them at places like ebay for a few bucks. Or maybe keep your eyes open at yard sales, scoop 'em up at 10 for $1 and resell them online to collectors.

Bit of trivia. Actor Vic Tayback (Mel the cook from the show Alice) appeared in the first and last episodes.

  • Tales of the Darkside movie... that the one with numerous stories read out by a kid to a witch planning to eat him, stories about a certain Egyptian Mummy pulling people's brains out with a clothes hangar... and a killer Cat? D:

Dang, this was too long ago... :P

Yeah that's the one, the witch was Deborah harry, the singer. That story was inspired by Hansel and Gretel. Actually a lot of kids fairy tales are very dark if you look twice at them.

The one with the mummy was Lot 249, Steve Buscemi, Christian Slater, Jullianne Moore and Robert Sedgwick were in that story.

And the one with the cat was called "Cat from hell" with Willaim Hickey, who used to be good friends with my Grandad.

  • I dont think this ever made it across here.I always liked both Creepshow 1&2 and if its of similar ilk it should be shown.

As for Twilight Zone the movie...do ya wanna see something really scary (with Dan Ackroyd)? Excellent movie!

The show had a lot of good story material. The production value was so so. Had stories from talented writers like Frederik Pohl, Clive Barker, Harlan Ellison etc. I liked how it touched on many genres, sci-fi, horror, thriller and just downright weird and always a twist at the end.

Creepshow 1&2 with twilight Zone The Movie are very close to my top favorites. I really like anthology stories. I read pulp mags like Asimov's, Weird Tales, Fantasy and science fiction magazine, H.P Lovecra More..

  • The narrator sounds like the intro narrator voice on Half Life Two
