      I think historically, it is one who is castrated (unable to have sex) and therefore trustworthy to guard another man’s wife.

      While David had an instant connection to Jonathan and a deep affection for him, Scripture does not say he loved him as one loves a woman. It says he loved him as one loves his own soul. (1Sam 18:1) They did indeed make a covenant together (v.3), but it wasn’t the same as a marriage. Covenants were quite common then.
