Deputy Clotheslined By Telephone Pole Wires After Accident

An accident scene in Niagara County turned into a dangerous situation for a suspected drunk driver and a sheriff's deputy. Back in June, county sheriff deputies responded to an accident on River Road near Williams in Wheatfield. A white van hit a telephone pole which was partially on the ground and the wires were still connected and on the road. "They were attached to the other pole across the street which was still standing... so we shut the road," deputy Kevin Smith said.

Smith was on scene and a camera on his patrol car dash board was rolling when one vehicle didn't stop and went through the road block. The vehicle hit the wires which pulled the pole and just missed the deputy and smashed into a car. The wires tripped the deputy and he sustained minor injuries to the legs and neck. After Smith radioed for officers to catch the vehicle he fell to the ground in pain. It was a very close call. "Literally three seconds earlier I was standing where the pole would have taken my legs out, about 10 seconds earlier the pole would have struck me right across my body," Smith said.

The driver of the silver vehicle was arrested and charged with DWI and reckless driving, to name a couple.
