Safe Mode: On
Israel shocked French Football players avoided Auschwitz

The president of the
umbrella organization of France's Jewish communities said it was
“shocking” that France’s soccer team did not visit Auschwitz.
The team is playing in the European championship,
which is being held in Poland and the Ukraine.

According to the JTA news agency, the British, Italian, Dutch and
German teams all visited the Nazi extermination and concentration camp
near Krakow.

German soccer team blasted over Auschwitz visit / Ynet

Germany's
Jewish community criticizes national soccer team for not sending entire
team to Auschwitz visit, accuses team manager of 'colossal
insensitivity'
Full Story

The French team should have visited the camp “in light of how soccer
players serve as role models for young people,” wrote Dr. Richard
Prasquier, president of CRIF – the umbrella organization of French
Jewish communities.

Prasquier published the statement on June 12 on the CRIF website, under the title: “My (probably unheeded) commentary.”

He added the visit was also necessary because of “the ignorance of many young people,” despite efforts to educate them about the Holocaust.

Prasquier noted that the French team was based at Donetsk in Ukraine,
853 miles from Auschwitz, while the British and Italian teams were
based in Krakow.

“However,
an airplane would have shortened the trip. The fact that the visit was
apparently not even considered is shocking,” Prasquier wrote.

  • really ? so it's mandatory to visit Auschwitz ?

Why the hell would i wanna visit a place where thousands of people were murdered ? That the stuff of bad karma and bad vibes.

Yes we know about Auschwitz and know what happened, but wtf man who would wanna visit there unless you knew someone who was imprisoned there.

Now the team are gonna be called a bunch of anti-semites and racists.

    Fuck off.

    • @mylostsoul It's not enough to know what happened there. If you visit Poland, you have to visit Auschwitz, just as you have to visit Yad Vashem when you visit Israel.
It's not about choice. There is no choicem really.

Either you go and visit those places (and show yourself to be sufficiently affected), or you'll face ramifications.

    • @Pestis Well, of course there is a chioce of some form.
Conform and visit those places - or face the ramifications. Especially if you are a person of public interest.

I would claim that, e.g., no U.S. or German politician can visit Israel without having to visit Yad Vashem. Those people have no choice at all.

    • @mylostsoul It is the way it is.
One could claim the European football championships of 2012 have little to do with the Holocaust, more than 67 years earlier.

But those games take place in Poland and the Ukraine, so... all teams have to go there. Really, all those fans, they must, simply MUST want to be reminded of what happened almost 70 yrs. ago... not that it has got anything to do with football. But the European Championship is such a good opportunity to remind people of the Holocaust. As i More..

  • So freakin' what. These people are young and on tour with their team. They want to do fun and exciting things in their travels while they are young. They are not obliged to go and be somber at some rusting and crumbling old vestige of the past.

The Jews cried "Never Again"!!! but guess what? It did happen again, in the 90's during the Balkan wars. Concentration camps. Again. In Europe.

    Where were the Jews then?

Did the IDF "visit" the concentration camps then when they cou More..

  • The French team also avoided getting beaten to death by a cucumber, having their skin removed by a cheese grater and hooking their balls up to a car battery. When the manager of the team was asked why the lads even considered these activities he replied "they were looking for excuses not to go to Auschwitz".
