Future of beer - the self-chilling can
The world's first self-chilling can is
to go on sale in the UK - which can turn lukewarm beer or fizzy drinks
ice cold in two minutes.
All you need to do to get an ice-cold drink is press a button at the base of the can.
Pressurised
carbon dioxide is released from a capsule, chilling the can by 15
degrees centigrade. The can was shown off this week, and is expected to
be on sale later this year. Source:

Cold beer on camping and canoe trips. This is a MAJOR paradigm shift.

@Poosti Malaka I just came back from a week in Algonquin Park.... I would have killed for some of these, the old mesh bag in the water doesn't work as well.

@OlDutch A week in the woods - paradise! I am heading out to Park LaVerendrye with the boys end of this month. No campfires though, we have a fire ban here. We could use the cold beer to sooth our souls and chase down the scotch. cheers!

Very cool, but making beer "ice cold" ruins the flavour profile. Most beer should be drank around room temperature or slightly below.
I'm a bit of a beer snob.

lol
I saw that as soon as you said "Flavor Profile"...I have some friends like you. They drink their beers by seasons. They hang out in beer forums like I hang out here. They turn their noses up at my Coronas and Pacificos...hahaha

Pacifico isn't half bad. Don't get me started on Corona, hehe.

Pacifico is awesome.Much darker a beer from the watered down Corona's. But as hot and humid as it gets here in Florida, a nice cold Corona hits the spot after mowing 6 acres. I lived in Holland for years and drank some really great Dutch and Belgian beers/ales. So I know enough about good beers to keep a conversation going. My buddies are all into drinking German Heifeweizens and Belgian Ales.

I tend toward German and Belgian beers, myself, but I sure do like a well-made North American IPA.

It may have its uses , but for the most part, the cost doesn't justify the need..an ice cooler will solve the problem 98% of the time for much less .

@soilentgreene Agreed but most coolers are bulky and annoying to carry..you can put a dozen in a shopping bag with these and not worry about ice :P

Wonder how much it's gonna cost?If too much, I'll stick with a cooler and ice.

Cool concept, but I really dont see it making a 12-16 oz. beer actually cold instantly. The can may be and the beer may be "cooler" than it was but it's not an ice cold one for sure.

@gonehuntin Not instant..that would be TOO easy lol..takes up to 2 minutes to completely cool the contents

@gonehuntin even if the entire contents didnt get ice cold, this would still be ace on a long canoe camping trip.

Let me guess - CO2 in a jacket outside of the beer. Press the button, and the gas expels. Presto, JT cooling. Thermodynamics at its finest. Salut!

pifft, about time.. the Japs have had these cans for almost a decade now.. it's a little reservoir of liquid CO2 housed on the base of the can. when you pop the bottom you pressurize the CO2 which caused the liquid CO2 to freeze into dry ice. this is what cools the drink.
