The funny footage was posted by satirical site The Poke, with the title "There's a problem with Brighton's Christmas lights".
They claim it's the work of a fed-up electrician who installed the lights in Churchill Square and Western Road.
However, it it more likely that the video is a clever spoof using special effects to give everyone an extra helping of festive cheer.
Councillor Jason Kitcat, leader of Brighton & Hove City Council, said that the lights were paid for and put up by local traders through the Business Improvement District 'Brilliant Brighton'.
He added: “The video is a creative spoof, but it is making people smile and getting thousands of people talking about Brighton & Hove in the run up to Christmas. That has got to be good news for the city and good news for its traders."
