Phantom limb pain. Can you imagine how frustrating that would be?

We all watch videos on LiveLeak where people lose a limb, whether it results from a traumatic injury or from the Mexican cartels, people lose limbs all the damn time in the vids on this site..Vilayanur Ramachandran is a brilliant and innovative neurologist who has invented a mechanism called a "mirror box" that has proven to eliminate such phantom limb pain in the majority of amputees who try it. Fast forward to the 3 minute mark if you only want to see the mirror box demonstration.

  • I remember this from awhile back. Completely fascinated by it.

Saw another show on one of the Discovery Channels which featured a guy who felt like his left leg just didn't belong. Was another deep seated brain issue. He ended up traveling someplace 3rd world to have it amputated. A perfectly good leg, just that his mind had rejected it and it was driving him crazy. All kinds of weird issues out there.

  • A friend of mine lost both legs, and when he woke up at night to take a piss, he would forget that he had no legs, with the predictable results.

  • so hypothetically, a person who has had a sex change operation might want to jack off his vagina.

  • My son experienced some of this after his amputation. The phantom pain went away after about a year or so.

  • They say your brain wakes up bit by bit. I did a zombie thing just now. I was making breakfast. And I noticed I had put the kettle on. I wasn't having coffee yet, but I didn't really remember doing it. It was like "when did I put the kettle on?" Vague memory of filling it. Heh. It's like those things when you put the milk in the cupboard, then you go "WAIT A MINUTE!" Ah, I can't wait til I get old. So many mysteries to explore. "How the hell did that get there?" &qu More..

  • A bit out of topic but , I'm so happy I don't have any amputated limbs, handicap, mental illness or miserable living condition that we see frequently here on LL, I'm destroying my liver with booze and my lungs with haschich at the moment.
