Ayn Rand Railed Against Government Benefits, But Grabbed Social Security and Medicare When She Needed Them
At least she put up a fight before succumbing to the imperatives of the real world.

Ayn Rand was not only a schlock novelist, she was also the progenitor of a sweeping “moral philosophy” that justifies the privilege of the wealthy and demonizes not only the slothful, undeserving poor but the lackluster middle-classes as well.

Her books provided wide-ranging parables of "parasites," "looters" and "moochers" using the levers of government to steal the fruits of her heroes' labor. In the real world, however, Rand herself received Social Security payments and Medicare benefits under the name of Ann O'Connor (her husband was Frank O'Connor).

  • Libertarians and libertarianism have nothing, nada, zilch to do with either conservatism, republicanism or corporatism.

Libertarianism works on very specific principles which none of the above do.

No, I'm sorry, but that's just ahistorical, magical thinking.

"Old conservatives" are part and parcel of why we're in the is mess today. Start with Nixon and Reagan's War on Drugs and work from there.

We agree that the current Republican Party pushes some ridiculous ideas; but extremism is now the GOP normal. Evangelical/Fundamentalists have taken over the party, and destroyed any principle it might once have claimed.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. 100 years ago is, indeed, REALLY old conservatism.

Teddy Roosevelt is spinning in his grave somewhere about what's going on today.

  • I love it, libtards force people to pay into government-run social security nets then attempt to pull a "gotcha" when people try to get their money back. Weak argument.

  • There is no Judeo-Christian, there is only Christian. Christian values and Jewish values are not the same, and not near the same. There are extreme differences between the two that cannot allow them to be connected as part of each either. Christians have even had to make laws, called Usury Laws, to protect the everyday people from Jewish values.

Rand is simply stating typical Jewish philosophy which is 'God has ordained it'. If you are poor and crippled, God made it so. If you are rich, God mad More..

    • @KutKorners Stfu you ignorant moron. The jewish bible (to which Christians ascribe) is replete with laws commanding charitable giving, laws against usury, and others.

Nearly all of the values that are seen to be "Christian" are in fact Jewish since jesus and all of his disciples were (gasp) jewish!

Yes, Judeo-Christian has a very specific meaning.

    • @MajorPaynei86 Jesus was not Jewish, and once his disciples were Christian, they were no longer Jewish either. They were all Christian.

Jesus spoke against Judaism. He went around converting Jews in order to save them. I am not a religious person but I know there is scripture which reads Jesus naming Jews as Satan. In fact the Jews chose the thief to save and not Jesus because they no longer considered Jesus as Jew but the thief was Jewish and according to Jewish law if you choose between a J More..

    • @Tanngrisnir3 I speak on any attempt to connect values of one to the another . The speaker in the video did not use this term as a vague general connection based on lineage of Abraham, but rather all encompassing relationship between the two faiths.

    • @MajorPaynei86 Charity is something that should be given due to ones moral values, not mandated and enforced by governments. If people took care of themselves better they wouldn't need welfare of any kind.(< that's a period)PERIOD!

  • Ayn Rand, (real name: Alissa Rosenbaum) was a Jewish Russian who saw her family's wealth dispossessed by the Russian Revolution. She developed her extremist views because she feared the same would happen in America.

Why is California such a massive disaster Zardoz?

  • Ayn Rand's father ran a wealthy pharmacy in Russia. When she was 12, the Bolsheviks took it away so she became an extreme anti-communist like Senator McCarthy. Her ideas about self-determination and inspiration are good but her abandonment of the sick, children and the elderly is just too extreme for most Westerners.

She saw those things as a slippery slope to Communism - time has proven her dead wrong. Only fear-mongering Republicunts would try to paint her story any differently.

  • I have never read Rand's works and never plan to do so since she has so much additional baggage attached to her.

However, I am a libertarian ever since studying political philosophy in college such as Plato, Aristotle, Machiavelli, Kant, Hobbes, Hume, Locke, Rosseau, and others.

    1. the government steals money from you in the form of taxation supposedly because you are incapable of taking care of yourself in the future. And if you decide not to pay them they will come to in prison you, and if you resist that, they will kill you.

  • Obviously, you don't understand Libertarian point of view. We believe the Federal Government should not be involved. States can handle the poverty better in the first place. Further, if a State allows it's people to become destitute. Then it is easier for the people of a state to remove their own politicians and legislatures than to have to remove the entire frigging countries Governance. If my Senator is killing poor people then I can shot him because he is here. However, it is much harder to g More..

  • Rand didn't take benefits. She got back some of what the government took from her. It's not a concept liberals are really able to understand. When you pay in, and pay in, and pay in, and then get some back, it's an entitlement.
