"29-year-old man faces new charge of abusing 13-year-old"
PROVO — A week and a half after posting bail in a pending sex abuse of a minor case, a 29-year-old Provo man was arrested for investigation of the same thing Sunday.
Caleb Steiner was charged in October 2009 with unlawful sexual activity with a minor, a third-degree felony, according to court documents. He posted bail in that case Sept. 22. He was then arrested around 5 p.m. Sunday, 11 days after bailing out of jail in his initial case, after the mother of a 13-year-old victim called police telling them Steiner was in bed with her daughter, according to an affidavit filed in Provo's 4th District Court.
The mother told police that she could hear Steiner in her basement, the affidavit states. When an officer arrived on scene, he said he found the two under a blanket together.
When asked what was going on, he told officers: "I have a problem with little girls because they think I am younger than I am, and I use that to get the young girls to come to me," the affidavit states.
He allegedly told the officer that he and the 13-year-old have been together for 18 months and that they had "been messing around here and there throughout the time," according to the affidavit.
Police say the victim told the responding officer that she was in love with Steiner and that they were just cuddling, but that he did touch her exposed chest.
According to the affidavit, the victim was "emotional and very evasive" in speaking with police.
Steiner was booked into jail for investigation of sexual abuse of a child, a second-degree felony.
In January, Steiner pleaded not guilty to the 2009 charge of sex with a minor, using an insanity defense. He was deemed competent to stand trial in September and will have his preliminary hearing in that case on Tuesday. His initial court appearance for the most recent case will be Oct. 12.
