to paint a locomotive
engine no 6920 undergoes a repaint into Veterans Livery. 26 people using nearly 70 gallons of paint take 120 hours to turn out this fine paint job which represents for the company Norfolk Southern their commitment to hire veterans and to Honour those who serve. They currently employ some 1300 vets. Good work.
time lapse video of the Juniata Paint Shop in Altoona, Pa., and how they worked their magic to create the Veterans Locomotive.

To me, those guys painting that locomotive are heros. I mean, they are great at what they do, and get little to no recognition for it. Challenge a bunch of professional athletes to go against these guys getting a locomotive painted, and we know who would win, but there is no glory for the paint crew.
It is sad that such fine, productive work is so devalued today, due to economic pressure. I bet anything that paint job is done on strict time pressures and douchey customers, just like any othe More..

@voice of the people True enough, when I bought a TV I went for the cheapest/best combo as best I could. I just think there can be a better way, if we put our minds to it.

Thank You Norfolk Southern for the idea and Thank You Juniata/Altoona for the effort.
That is one of the nicest things I have seen in a while.
Well Done!

@marc1921 yes, you're right marc, the lacquer spraying helps prevent any other paint getting a hold on the baked-on enamel so in theory any other paint can be removed relatively easily at a local depot.

I was about to suggest they use vinyl wrap. Though the locomotives don't usually get tagged I don't think. They're always operating and seldom parked.

Why would you hire veterans? Its more probable that they have health issues, both physical and mental. Its the equivalent of hiring fat people but you dont see a company saying "we hire only fat people". No its not something they do for the veterans its something they do for good publicity.

@FarkinAye People hire them because of tax breaks for those companies. A lot of hiring managers I know try to avoid hiring them just because many are too set in their ways and it just has been a bad experience trying to hire them.

On the contrary, Veterans are frequently in better shape mentally and physically than people of equal age who have not had to maintain a level of fitness.
In most cases Veterans have a proven ability to follow orders and perform under stress.
Veterans understand hierarchy (chain of command).
Veterans are used to working closely with other people.
Normally Veterans are more mature and experienced.
But you are at least partly right, Publicity does play a role.

Outstanding, proudly, 4 generations of my father's family worked at the locomotive works in Altoona, building and servicing everything from steam to these huge beasts. We still do build great things in America.

It's moving to see something like this.
Very refreshing to see that Big Business will allow it's Craftsmen to make such a fine tribute to our Soldiers.
I'll be looking for it.
