Dying family member’s last wish

Family makes good on dying family member’s last wish: Leave $500 tip - July 11, 2012

A dying man's last wish was to make someone else's day. After his death, the family of Aaron Collins fulfilled his wish to go have pizza and leave their server a $500 tip.

The story surfaced on the blog Fark: 30-year-old Collins, a computer technician who died July 7, had no money to make his wish come true. So his family raised the cash through a website after just a few days and then made good on his request. At Puccini's restaurant in Lexington, Ky., the family lunched on pizza, and then presented one very lucky waitress with $500.

The video captures the moment. As the cash is handed over, the waitress keeps asking, "Are you serious?" She then promises to share her good fortune with other restaurant staff, and says, "You know, I'm going to be telling this story for the rest of my life."

To introduce the video, Aaron's brother Seth writes, "We think he just wanted to provide a random act of kindness and generosity for someone he thought was under appreciated; the kind of thing that would make a lasting impact they would never forget." Mission very accomplished.

The website continues to accept donations, and the family plans to give away big tips every time they raise another $500, noting, "We have already received over $500 more, so we will be doing this again soon. Hopefully we can continue changing the lives of random waiters and waitresses for years."

  • I had a patient once and when I discharged him to go home and die (he actually died 12 days later), he opened his wallet and started forking over one $20 bill after another. I stopped him, saying that I couldn't accept his money. His wife then grabbed my hand and said "Are you going to refuse a dying man his last wish?".
I accepted his money on one condition, that I could provide food and snacks for the entire staff - he accepted.

  • that is cool but i wonder if his brother wanted him to make a big production out of it.

i had a much older friend, 85 or so that passed away. at the funeral, the priest finished up his thing, held a signed, blank check from my dead friend, and said that Jim had invited all of us to the bar for one last drink on him, and we all got up and went. he had arranged that when he found out he was going to die. pretty cool. i hope to do the same thing.

  • 30 is very young age to die, poor Aaron. He'll be remembered for this. But generosity, making someone happy, is actually a very enjoyable and fulfilling thing to do. I'm sure that waitress can use the money too.
It's even better to give discreetly.

  • Why only waiters and waitresses? what about cabbies? there are also lots of other professions that get tips too! OK! THERE IS A CATCH TO THIS WHOLE THING! IF IT WAS PURE WILL, THEN WHY WOULD THEY RECORD THE WHOLE EVENT. WHY DONATIONS TO A SITE! I CAN'T QUITE PUT MY FINGER ON IT BUT THERE'S SOMETHING TO THIS WHOLE THING. He died not being abLE to afford to leave a big tip (500 BUCKS NO LESS) TO people who serve at a food joint and these people make 150-400.00 a night in tips. WHAT ABOUT PEOPLE WH More..
