David Short murder: Man held as armed police probing grenade attack seal off Droylsden street Dan Thompson

August 14, 2012

Police investigating the gun and grenade killing of David Short have arrested a man on suspicion of murder.

Armed police cordoned off a street in Droylsden this afternoon as
part of the probe into Mr Short’s death after he was slain at his
Clayton home.
Officers arrested a 28-year-old man on suspicion of the murder on
York Road, a police spokesman confirmed. He has been taken in custody,
where he will be quizzed by detectives.
But two men being hunted in connection with the probe – one-eyed
Dale Cregan, 29, from Droylsden, and 33-year-old Anthony Wilkinson, from
Beswick – remain at large.

Mr Short was blasted to death at his home on Folkestone Road East, Clayton, at 10.30am on Friday.

Nine minutes later, a grenade was thrown at a house on Luke Road, Droylsden. No one was hurt in that attack.

Mr Short’s death came just months after his son Mark was killed in a pub shooting.

This afternoon, police probing the gun and grenade attacks
cordoned off an area around Sunnyside Court and Lancaster Road in
Droylsden.
Witnesses told how some officers surrounded a red vehicle on Lancaster Road while others moved from house to house.

One said: "The whole estate is swarming with armed police. There are more than 20 armed officers here.

"It’s very tense. There are crowds of people out on the streets and people are asking the police what’s going on."

Today’s arrest is the third made in connection with Friday’s attacks.

A 37-year-old man arrested on Saturday in Salford on suspicion of murder has been bailed pending further inquiries.

A second man, aged 25, was arrested on Sunday night on suspicion of murder and has also now been bailed.

Police have issued CCTV footage from the Luke Road attack and appealed for help to identify and trace those responsible.

Assistant Chief Constable Steve Heywood, said: "Over the past few
days, an intensive police operation has been underway to identify and
trace those involved in these violent attacks, which have left one man
dead. Armed officers have also been patrolling in the Clayton and
Droylsden areas to provide reassurance to residents.
"While we do not believe these two attacks were random, people in the area are understandably concerned by what has happened.

"We have made this arrest and are continuing to look for two men -
Cregan and Wilkinson - who we want to speak to in connection with
Friday’s attacks. We are urging any members of the public that have seen
them since Friday morning, or who know where they are now, to contact
us immediately. Please do not try and approach these men, but call the
police on 999."
Mark Short, an amateur boxer, suffered a fatal gunshot to the
neck in May after a gunman burst into The Cotton Tree Inn, in Droylsden,
and opened fire.
Dale Cregan is wanted in connection with both murders.
