Report: 83 percent of doctors have considered quitting over Obamacare

Eighty-three percent of American physicians have considered leaving their practices over President Barack Obama’s health care reform law, according to a survey released by the Doctor Patient Medical Association.

The DPMA, a non-partisan association of doctors and patients, surveyed a random selection of 699 doctors nationwide. The survey found that the majority have thought about bailing out of their careers over the legislation, which was upheld last month by the Supreme Court.

Even if doctors do not quit their jobs over the ruling, America will face a shortage of at least 90,000 doctors by 2020. The new health care law increases demand for physicians by expanding insurance coverage. This change will exacerbate the current shortage as more Americans live past 65.

By 2025 the shortage will balloon to over 130,000, Len Marquez, the director of government relations at the American Association of Medical Colleges, told The Daily Caller.

“One of our primary concerns is that you’ve got an aging physician workforce and you have these new beneficiaries — these newly insured people — coming through the system,” he said. “There will be strains and there will be physician shortages.”

The DPMA found that many doctors do not believe the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will lead to better access to medical care for the majority of Americans, co-founder of the DPMA Kathryn Serkes told TheDC.

“Doctors clearly understand what Washington does not — that a piece of paper that says you are ‘covered’ by insurance or ‘enrolled’ in Medicare or Medicaid does not translate to actual medical care when doctors can’t afford to see patients at the lowball payments, and patients have to jump through government and insurance company bureaucratic hoops,” she said.

The American Medical Association, which endorsed Obama’s health care overhaul, was not able to immediately offer comment on the survey. Spokesperson Heather Lasher Todd said it would take time to review the information in the survey.

Janelle Davis of the American Academy of Family Physicians said the AAFP could not provide thoughtful commentary without studying the survey’s findings and methodology.

  • About 3 years ago I got a new job with heath care benefits, dick head obama said he was going to do obamacare. My premiums went up by 31%. The next year he and the democrats made it a new law, and sure enough they went up again by another 31% for a total of 62%. Just before the law went into effect me and my family’s doctor quit her thriving practice because she could no afford to stay in business with the new changes, she was the best doctor I ever had. Great with my kids, me and my wife.

    • @the_dude1234 My wife was an independent medical transcriptionist for local doctors. She lost all but one doctor over the last 2 years because they were squeezed and couldn't afford her services (which were not expensive). She had to cancel her remaining client and shut it down.

    • @the_dude1234 Actually if they added .31 cents to the dollar, and then added another 31% it would total 72% rise in cost(.716).

  • Holy Hell, I didn't everyone was going to flip a shit on this post.

I didn't conduct the survey or write the story, you guys. The Doctor Patient Medical Association (which is an organization that is devoted to repealing Obamacare) conducted the survey.

That being said, I truly believe that this puts huge strain on healthcare. Doctors hate this law.

  • Obunga has already said that there could possibly be a shortage of doctors IF his health care plans go through so with that issue the homeland security losers will probably open the flood gates and let in more indian/paki and other third world wanna be doctors in our country so we can change the face of America even more then it already has been changed with these people. We have enough of third world immigrants here, multiculturalism is a failure around the world, but that is Obungas plan, just li More..

  • keep reposting the story and I'll keep reposting the truth at the heart of the matter:

Doctor Patient Medical Association officially launched in late Fall 2011.

    helluva track record there. lol

    http://www.doctorsandpatients.org/who-we-are

"We believe that the battle for medical freedom is about more than just repealing the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA)."

(But that's why this organization seems to exist)

Hey bro, it's no joke. Doctors hate this crap. It's another layer of inefficient BS between a doctor and his patients, suppliers, and insurance companies. Two of my doctor clients don't even deal with insurance any more. When a sole proprietor has to have 20 employees to run a one doctor business, the red tape is too much.

    • @2DLISH2QUIT - Really "insurance companies hate it" riddle me this Ace: Why is that?

    • @2DLISH2QUIT

How so? If the government mandated that EVERYBODY had to buy your product or service, why would that bother you?

Plus for the past two years I've been hearing that the insurance companies helped write, promote, and lobby for this bill. As one guy put it: "According to Mr. Carney, the real reason why health insurers wanted the individual mandate was not to prevent "free riders," i.e. people without health insurance who get care at emergency rooms. Instead- and Blue More..

  • More Facts:

As our national debt soars to record levels economists and politicians are looking for ways to cut the already out of control spending that has led to a 14.3 trillion dollar deficit. With the addition of universal health care this deficit is only going to increase. President Obama is quoted as saying, “I will not sign on to any health plan that adds to our deficits over the next decade. And by helping improve quality and efficiency, the reforms we make will help bring our deficit More..

Yeah, but ask any liberal and they will tell it is FREE. They are wrong, as usual.

      Posted Jul-9-2012 By

    • @cajunmojo ....ALL of these costs are being incurred WITHOUT Obamacare already. With mandatory insurance, more people will pay these costs so the cost per person will come down.

The doctors have the skills we need to continue living long lives.

If the doctors go on strike for three months and only provide emergency care it would turn the obama system on its head.

The doctors and the patients are the ones who should really have the final say in this.

There is nothing the government does better than private business. Except creating rules to continually justify its bloated workforce.

There has been a lot of talk about voting business people into the congr More..

    • @Nepean109 You haven't a clue. I am a provider and have already cut out the companies that have dropped their reimbursements by 30 to 50%. I now make the client file their own insurance forms and try and get their own reimbursement. Ins billing is a courtesy only service. The consumer will now have to file their own and providers like myself will require full cash payment up front due to the drops in rates. Ya know who will be paying significantly more? The poor!! Yay horay for the great Messiah More..

  • 'Even if doctors do not quit their jobs over the ruling, America will face a shortage of at least 90,000 doctors by 2020.'

That is reason enough to repeal this crap.

    • @cswartz here's the truth of the matter:

in the real world, there's about as much chance of that actually happening as there is roe vs. wade being repealed (and how long ago was that passed...?). Romeny talks like it would be easy. Another lie said just to get elected.

    • @2DLISH2QUIT

Are you saying there will NOT be a shortage of doctors in the U.S.?

I think abortion should be legal, and I wouldn't repeal Roe v. Wade. I wouldn't support a measure to repeal it.

      Posted Jul-9-2012 By

    • @cswartz It's just VERY difficult to repeal a law like this. Time wasted fighting windmills realistically.
      Check the facts...

  • 83% may 'consider' quitting but the actual amount that did would be incredibly low if any at all. I consider quitting my job every few days, doesn't mean I'm going to.

  • Don't anyone dare challenge what a doctor thinks, apparently. Stupid Liveleak fucks think every damn thing is about money. Doctors are having the care they provide greatly impacted by this idiot law, choc full of holes and inconsistencies, passed on political motivations, late in December, by politicians that don't even know what's in it.

Some of you have expanded your depths of ignorance and stupidity because you're a Liberal. Enjoy.
