CH-47 Chinook Transporting A-10 Warthog
When a tow truck just won't do. Looks very tedious.

I'll be impressed if they manage to do it the other way around

After watching this for a couple of minutes, I have not the slightest idea what they are trying to achieve, and I don't think they have either.

@wawa17 My guess is its a training exercise for carrying such an object and perhaps how to control the load from spinning with the effects of the downdraft and other momentum effects on the load.

@wawa17 They are moving the A10 to the base entrance as a static display. Most bases have aircraft on stands at or near their main gate.

I have nothing but admiration for Chinook's. I have been very fortunate to have seen one up close when I was in the forces. Truly a workhorse.

@Samurai Nice, but Mi-26 could transport both A-10 and CH-47... + Cessna 172 ;-] Mi-26 can transport almost 30 tons. Btw Chinook is very good transport choper.

Maybe it had reached the end of its life, and was going to be a static display there.

Just shows how strong the airframe is in the A10. Not many aircraft you could just hook up and throw around like that without the airframe letting go - has to be a static though - just to be safe eh?!
Airframe is built around that wee beasty of a tank busting grunt killing main gun.
Awesome killing machine.

Not the first time this has been done:

Were they setting up the A-10 as a display aircraft? It appears they placed it next to another gate guardian.

@Tallaxo Pretty light load for a Chinook to be honest. These things can carry tanks.

I remember being back at school a few years ago (when the war in Iraq started) when suddenly a loud noise broke every silence and few moments later like twenty Chinooks flew over... That's a moment to fall in love with...
The whole school stepped outside to behold them...

@KillerRu
When I was a youngster, in 1994, a Chinook flew very fast and very very low, right over my house. It flew so low the windows were vibrating. It turned out to be the very same one that crashed at the Mull of Kintyre in Scotland.
At the time we all thought they were having some kind of difficulty as a Chinook would never normally fly that low at that kind of speed. (Living where I lived in Northern Ireland at that time, army helicopters were a regular sight)
