D&D ran from 1983 to 1985 with 27 episodes. Yeah it was based on the game. Sort of controversial show in it's day. Lot of people freaking out saying it was violent, mostly the real issue was religious types had a problem with the whole subject matter of the D&D thing and used any excuse to make a ruckus about it. The show is actually somewhat tame. Venger was Dungeon Master's son, holy ficken shit! No final episode for this series, kinda leaves you hanging.

I decided that instead of putting a bunch of cartoons together in blocks, as cartoon intros are usually short, they'd each get their own episode as usual, with some exceptions. As such I will be making them into minisodes, with an intro and one or two kid orientated commercials. About two minutes or less. I figure it's appropriate that the Saturday retro TV should be a
cartoon each week, though I'll have to post cartoon intros during the
week at times too, there are a lot of them.

  • Nobody protested the D&D cartoon. The protests were because it was so lame. I mean, cavalier? And that stupid unicorn? Blech. One of the worst things that had the D&D name attached, and that's saying a lot.

Yes, in fact the show was protested by some religious organizations. Protests for TV content doesn't take the form of carrying signs outside of networks. It's done with organized letter writing campaigns. This show garnered much more than usual. It was the latent pagan symbolism of the game that was also somewhat expressed in the show that was the problem. For instance the dragon seen in this opening is a representation of Tiamat, from Babylonian mythology.

The tactic was to c More..

Growing up as a kid ( Im 43 ) there were always cartoons on be it mickey mouse / roadrunner etc.

There have not been any cartoons made by walt disney on terrestrial telly in the uk for years as if I remember right the cartoon network got all the rights.

Shame really as most kids of today have no idea who the jetsons were.

Even now, it's Sat. morning and I'm scanning through the bottom 20 channels or so...which includes all of the major national networks like ABC, CBS, NBC...exactly 1 channel has cartoons...and it's that anime stuff where they take Japanese cartoons and dub in ridiculous English dialogue.

      Good link thanks!

Point of trivia. That youtube video is ripped from a DVD not an original broadcast. Which doesn't matter to anyone except a retro collector maybe. Perfectly fine copy to watch.

If anyone is interested, in that youtube link pay attention to the part in the opening credits where Uni(The unicorn) jumps up into Bobby the Barbarian's arms, although the hoof sound effect is present the baying sound it makes is missing. There is a minor sound track missing in the DVD re More..
