A Novosibirsk resident demonstrated the depths of the cold in his city by pouring a pot of boiling water into the air from one of the top floors of his apartment building, and watched it instantly turn into a cloud of frozen droplets.
The unidentified man showed a temperature reading of minus 41 degrees Celsius on his mobile phone before launching the water out the window.
The footage has emerged as severe frost affects large parts of Russia. In the far eastern regions of the country temperatures have fallen to minus 50 degrees Celsius, with minus 20 degrees Celsius recorded in central parts.
Meteorologists say that for some regions such low temperatures have not been recorded for more than half a century.

The hot water actually freezes quicker than cold. Water is in smaller particles, especially so from such a height.
Also, did you know that the Zamboni (that big truck used in hockey arenas to smooth out the ice) actually uses HOT water, not cold, to form that new smooth layer of ice? Regardless, it still looks damn cold there.

Hot water is actually cleaner with less impurities, which gives it an advantage. A lot of the crud in the hot water is in the hot water tank and pipes.

Boiling water tossed from a great height. Rapidly spreads and mixes with the surrounding air. Meh...
Once I was shocked by how cold it was during the blizzard of '85 in Buffalo NY. Wind gusts of 53 mph, I don't know what the temperature was or the windchill but it was effing cold.
While shoveling the driveway at home I paused, horcked up a lunger and spit. It bounced off the freshly cleared bare asphalt. I heard it "tick" as a tossed pebble would when it hit. Frozen solid in the span More..

@ValleyBlacksmith Screw shoveling when it's that cold. I was at a new years party once when it was -40f, and we never did run out of ice for the drinks.

That's what the window box is for outside of the sliding glass window within reach of the Lay-Zee-Boy.
In the summer it sports the wife's flowers. In the winter it sports longnecks. ;)

@BigTexun This simply has not been proven, and is a strongly debated theory.
It does not happen every time which makes it a debated theory.
I suspect muddy murky or salty "cold" water will not freeze quickly. Distilled "hot" water will freeze more quickly. All things "purity" and temperature being equal? Hot water freezes more slowly then cold water.
In some cases it has been found that Hot water will freeze more quickly then cold. Should you place both samples o More..
