  • The real financiers try not to have weapons trace directly back to their source so they buy weapons on the black market. The question of who controls Al Qaeda is kind of mind boggling when you think how unconcerned the West is over these anti-aircraft missiles. Its like the western nations know that these missiles will only be used in Syrian theater and not in Afghanistan against NATO troops. The only explanation I can come up with is that NATO has a great deal of control over Al Qaeda, which op More..

  • I voted Other, since Syria wasn't an option. Defections and captures of weapons probably were the main methods of arming the FSA, at least early on...

    • @Ally_Gator No, that is what the rebels want you to think. I saw videos pretty early on (we are talking mid-2011) of rebels with Israeli-model FN FALs, M16s and customized AKs that would only have come from Lebanon. The rebels like to claim that their weapons were solely captured from the SAA, but it is pretty obvious that their strength only increased when the Turks and Saudis openly said they were arming the rebels.

  • Given I can't read Arabic I can't say about the MANPAD.

I'll guess the main supply is Saudi/Qatari funded purchases from Lebanon and Libya. There may be a small supply from Syria and an even smaller supply from Jordan.

    • @rocr62 and thats the bottom line war = profit

    • @rocr62

Regan warned us about what he referred to as "the military industrial complex" Basically saying that when war becomes profitable, there will never be peace. However he was not referring to industry, but the government. Today people seem to point the finger at the companies that make the hardware, instead of the governments that are causing the demand for them. The governments are dangling the carrots, and we get made at the rabbits that show up.

  • I would like to say it is largely Lebanon and Turkey that have supplied the actual weaponry to the FSA, with Saudi Arabia and Qatar providing the money to purchase additional weapons from arms dealers.

In the case of Lebanon, Sunni militias and political parties sympathetic to the FSA have been smuggling guns since the summer of 2011, taking advantage of the relatively porous border. This is why you see some of the western weapons such as M16s or FN FALs in rebel hands, as well as other gear ( More..

  • As far as the government forces, that is probably the Soviet Union/communist bloc. Russia has been kissy face with that country's government for a long time.

As for the rebels, its a little harder, a lot of their hardware is captured government hardware, some is whatever they could smuggle in and or buy. But one video I saw recently showed a dozen or so "freedom fighters" one or two were sporting AKs, the rest all had American M-16 type rifles, which struck me as rather surprising. More..

    • @Nothingisfree I'm not surprised since I think a major source of rebel arms is from Lebanon - not from the Lebanese government itself (which would rather not get involved) but from the numerous armed Sunni militias that have access to old stocks of western arms that were either given to them by Israel or the west at various points in the civil war. Also prevalent in the hands of the FSA are FN FALs - these I suspect are from Libya, which has allowed its fighters and their weapons to enter Syria More..

  • C-A-T-000p you are a stupid propagandist moron, all these weapons shown were captured from the SAA. you have a problem with arming the FSA, but no issue with iran, russia and probably china arming the SAA? you thick bastard, if you were being hunted down by a savage army would you just sit still like a duck and accept it or fight with anything you had? i suspect you do the latter

These men have never received a penny from abroad!

However where would be the problem? Also Assad gets weapons for millions of Russia, Iran and China and nobody says it. Assad is only a puppet of post-communist dictatorships.

Also these men need your help! Sell your house, forget your life and fight for freedom, with him!
