  • What many people don't understand when they are pointing the finger towards china, is that the technology to clean emissions by factories etc. are patented and in western hands, and these patent owners are operating their enterprise on a licence-basis.

China have said that they gladly want to clean up their industrial sector, but the problem is that since there is a monopoly on the technology to implement measures to clean and prevent the damaging emissions - they cannot do it by themselves, bu More..

    • I do agree with you on much of that Des, but seriously, China also has to stop being the mimic and learn to develop too. Mind you corporations should be the ones that demand or supply a better way to manufacture goods in China. Most of the airborne pollution is from their coal driven power plants, and coal is something they dont lack as a resource, but there are many other things that can be implemented just in day to day life that can make huge changes for the better.

  • China will do as it pleases. Every effort to clean up the world will be undone by them. They only banned traffic in Beijin because of the olympics - i.e. when the world is watching.

  • Wow ....that is very sad to see indeed . Can anyone blame them for wanting to move west .

China is the poster Child of a New World Order .

  • London and major northern Towns here in the UK once looked like that, we would have major fogs which would cloud all of LOndon due to all the wood and coal burning. Countless people died. The Thames was void of fish due to the fact it was an open sewer then we decided to get our act together.

And people argue that we do not have an effect on our environment.

    Very good vid Jenva

    • Yes Spud, things can be changed, and I cant help but feel that western corporations that choose to use cheap chinese labour play a huge hand in this. Ethically these corporations should be implimenting and demanding their products be made greener and cleaner in China. This developing nation seems to not understand that while they may be making money, they are paying a very high price...the "joke" is ultimately on them.

    • It's difficult to find items that aren;t made in China in some part these days but one thing we don;t have over here is Chinese imported food.

I knew America had it but didn't realise Australia did.

    • We have quite a lot of chinese imported foods here, our market is flooded, and the food really is inferior, and often tainted.

Similar to what the European community managed only a hundred and fifty years ago...

  • A lot of this is because the Liberals in America made so many laws the Manufacturing and Chemical industry left to go to China where they could operate cheaper.
So who loses we all do we lost jobs we lost the economic boost these jobs and products would have brought with them. Guess what the products are being made and 100's of times the amount of chemicals are going into the air and water.
    Good job tree huggers.
Guess what since they are in China now instead of America or the west they are More..

    • I dont really agree with the "liberal" tag, its not only the USA that chooses to have things manufactured in China. Profit before people seems to be something that is a common thread with many multi-national corporations. This problem isnt exclusive to china either, India too is just as bad with pollution on many levels. Corporations have no ethics when there is a dollar to be made.

  • hey Jen. Interesting vid. I have been reading about this for awhile now

"In the past six years, infant birth defects in China have increased by an unprecedented 40%. This rise is being blamed on pollution from factories. Now green campaigners are taking on the multinationals.

"The untreated waste is pumped out secretly at night", states activist Wu Deng Ming, pointing at a water outlet leading from a factory into a river. "People living along the river have enlarged liv More..

    • Hi Sluggoo, its just mind boggling. I was reading about how some water supply to a large city was contaminated, and the Chinese government issued an earthquake warning to it's residents, so they could be evacuated, rather than telling the truth that there had been a major chemical spill. We all should be appalled and concerned at what is going on here.

  • yea Jen, I read the same story about that evacuation. I just wonder if it will get so bad and there is an international outcry that China might take a few steps backwards and close borders, slow down tourism and become secrative again. Hopefully they will not and allow some help from other countries to help work on a solution

  • Well done Jenva, what you say is spot on. It's important to note that much of the world has outsourced its manufacturing to China, and thus some the pollution has just moved from one place to another. Unfortunately the Chinese are notorious for being content in living in squalid conditions, and don't actually 'notice' filth as we do.

From the communist government's point of view, they are simply following the lead of the west, and view it as hypocritical when we point our fingers at them. They More..

    • BTW, my comment about the Chinese may be viewed as racist, but I've actually been to China, and can assure you it's accurate. That is the reason so many diseases originate from there. They live in conditions that make India look hygienic in comparison.

    • I agree with you Chock, China has discovered the "joy" of capitalism and money, this new growth now sees them in trying to mirror the likes of the USA or Japan. I do wonder too, that with such an enormous population, if life just isnt a little bit expendable in the quest to become an economic giant. I have a friend teaching in china, he is always telling me that China always looks like it should be run through a car wash.

    • If you've never been to a third world country, it's impossible to grasp how low the value of human life can be. Certainly in India and China it is very low. In China I saw bodies floating in the Yangtze, which apart from being their sewerage disposal, is also their cemetery. This is a population that has lived through incredible hardships, not just in the 20th century, but the 19th, which was even worse for them.

Sidenote: much of China's 'cuisine' came from the 19th century, when people learnt More..
