In a demonstration rife with heated verbal confrontation, balaclava-clad Aryan Guardsmen marched on the steps of city hall yesterday afternoon battling a vocal anti-racism mob around them.
Calgary Police Service mountain bike cops provided the only barricade between the ardent anti-racism opposition of nearly 100 encircling the roughly 10 Neo-Nazis, who were there to protest against the right of Muslim women to wear burqas into polling stations.
When Lindsay Ross got wind of what the Aryans were up to, the social activist knew she had to get involved. She said she had an obligation to make sure the Aryan protest didn’t go unopposed.
“Now that Im here and I see how pathetic, frankly, their side is and how many more people our side has, I think that this is basically an anti-racism demonstration,” said Ross.
The Aryan group, suited in fatigues and thick, black combat boots, were shrouded in camouflage and black ski masks to symbolize their desire to also be covered when they cast their votes in today’s civic election — just as Muslim women can.
“This is Canada and they (Muslims with burqas) pose a security threat to the voting process itself,” said one member of the Neo-Nazi group who refused to give his name.
“If they want to be a Canadian citizen, they should abide by Canadian rules.”
Chants of, “hey, hey, ho, ho, Nazi scum has got to go,” and “Nazis Go!” chiseled down the resolve of the Aryan group and eventually they were bullied out of the plaza at city hall.
The anti-racism demonstrators wouldnt give up, as they chased the Aryans with signs and chants for 11 blocks, until cops once again separated the two sides.
Anti-racism demonstrators were held at bay as the Aryans were retrieved by cabs and ushered to safety with a police escort.
