MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A police dog owned by the Memphis International Airport Police Department is missing, officials said Tuesday.
Officials said the dog, Athos, went missing from his home in Cordova near Dexter Elementary on Saturday evening. It is believed the dog escaped from the backyard of his home after a gate blew open.
Athos is a light brown, 67-pound Belgian Malinois. His left ear is tattooed with "L055," and a computer ID chip has been implanted under his skin.
According to Joen Greaud at Memphis International Airport, the dog was provided by the TSA to sniff out explosives.
"We've notified the shelters," he said. "We've notified other police in the area so that if he happens to come up to a police car, since that's something he knows.
Tuesday, the Memphis/Shelby County Airport Authority announced a $500 reward for information leading to the dog's safe return.
Additionally, pictures of the dog have been posted around the area where it went missing.
Greaud said Athos is part of a four-man team of dogs and officers at the airport. His handler and the officers have combed the neighborhoods looking for him.
"The officer is extremely upset, as you might imagine," Greaud said. "It is his partner. It is his pet - his friend."
