Day in Pompeii
This video was produced by http://dayinpompeii.com/ and you will get more detail if you visit their site.
As a child DEADBEEF visited Pompeii during a stopover on a ship travelling between the UK and Australia. On the same trip the ship had a ringside seat of a spectacular night-time volcanic eruption in the Mediterranean.

Pompeii is the perfect example of how people react to an upcoming catastrophe. There are those in complete denial, then there are those that have little choice due to their social standing, and there are those that choose to leave it all behind because they see the coming danger and no matter what everyone else says they realise that nothing is more important than survival. Thats humanity in a moment in history, right there.

@absu69
I have a copy of 'The Annals of Tacitus' but you'll get that only out of my cold-dead hand.
I also have an original print set of 'The History of The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire' ditto.
Maybe a Birthday Card will do?

If you go to google maps and drag the little yellow man to the ruins of Pompeii you can tour the ruins as a tourist does.
https://maps.google.com.au/
Search string: Pompeii, Napoli, Italy
A curios fact about the devastation of Pompeii is that 1/2 the population left the day before due to an earth quake. So yes not everyone got killed only a small fraction of the population got killed (mostly slaves).

Really nice place to visit.
The actual town of Pompeii is still there, the ruins are excavated in the corner of the town near the railroad station.
Went there while in the Navy.
