  • Penguinister: "The pilot has become a liability in regards to modern fighters, UAV's will become more common in the future, a good example of how human pilots put limitations on jet fighters is the massive cooling system needed on each fighter to keep the pilot from fainting from heat."
not to mention you can get rid of all the life support systems, ejection seat, canopy, and saftey gear. That makes room for more fuel, weapons, avionics, and all on a smaller platform.

  • It is awesome -
but was it not 10 years late and cost almost twice the predicted budget. And then we nearly lost that massive contract with Saudi Arabia, are they not still going to by a load of these ?

  • It's probably true that these are the last generation of fighters to have a pilot.

  • What is really sad for all fighter pilots is that in about 5 years the US will have UAV's that can go way beyond all of these jets. The limitation now is what the pilot can do, 6G, or up to 9G for short term. The UAV's in development can go way above 9G's and kill any piloted aircraft. The stud fighter pilot will be replaced by the dork/dweeb computer gamer sitting in a cubicle somewhere flying a jet half way around the world.

  • What they fail to mention is that SAMs are able to hit speeds up to Mach 5. No Jet is gonna out run that.

It pays to be Stealthy and Supermaneuverable. Something the F-22 has achieved.

  • Dont forget, the UAV removed 1 VERY large factor out of an air-air battle.

    Fear.

You dont have to worry about losing your life, so that would only translate to being much more aggressive. Ive often wondered how long it would take for a true fighter type UAV to come out.

Its a possibility but it would be awful if a hacker in Thailand lead the UAVs (hopefully with no nukes) somewhere in Japan or somewhere else. Electronics are very unreliable and the cost of anti-spy st More..

There is always uncertainty. You can create a level of encryption that would be much more difficult to crack than some people. Look at how many Soviet pilot defectors there were over the years. I think I would take our chances on electronic encryption. Plus, you could always have some sort of self-destruct mechanism.

That's a rumor. People were running around saying destoryers were tracking them. Even still, "effective" low frequency radar installations are rather large and cannot directly pin-point a stealth aircraft too well. They give only a general area in which they may be. And I don't know where you got that It can't fire missles supersonically.
