anyone know if an IED is literally 'press a button at the right exact moment' ? I sure there are many triggers, but in these situations, its press a button, right?

Often they use a pressure plate, but you are right. There is a trigger-guy at the end of a wire or mobile phone.

thats what i thought, i wonder if they get any delays/lag times... just seems odd you would go to all that expense and risk to plan what looked like a pretty big bomb, only to have a guy press a button half a second too late, because that was a clear miss.

It's actually harder than it looks.
The triggerman is usually 200-300 metres away and the vehicle is moving fairly fast, plus there may be perspective problems.
Finally, if they are using a military clacker, some types fire half a second or more after after you press the trigger
