The ignorant will tell you that the AR 15 is a dirty gun that is unreliable and jams all of the time. While this may have been true during its introduction in the Vietnam War, the AR 15 has come a long way since then and has remained America's standard issue rifle since then for good reason. The AR 15 is far, far more reliable than people give it credit for. Those who experience problems with it either tend to have a rifle made by a mediocre manufacturer that doesn't follow mil-spec standards, or simply does not know how to care for it properly. All guns require basic maintenance, regardless of it design or maker.
The AR 15 can go for a very long time without being cleaned completely as long as the bolt is lubed. It can shoot dirty and wet, but it can't shoot dirty and dry. If you keep a log of how many rounds you go through, it will take roughly 18 magazines (or about 500 rounds) worth of ammo before you should even consider taking it apart to give it a good cleaning. Also, if you buy used magazines, make sure you replace the springs and get anti-tilt followers for all of them. If a magazine just doesn't want to work, throw it away and replace it.
If you watch the video and you still don't believe the reliability of the AR 15 platform, you should definitely check out the story of the Filthy 14. It made a believer out of me.
